WHO IS HERMELA AREGAWI?

Hermela Aregawi is an Ethiopian-American investigative journalist, producer, and T.V. show writer. She was the former general assignment reporter of CBS2/KCAL-TV. She is known for initiating and catalyzing the #NoMore movement. This movement aims to oppose and resist the Western media disinformation campaign, economic warfare, and diplomatic propaganda in Africa, particularly Ethiopia.

She was born on January 21, in the capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. Later on, she moved to the United States of America at seven. She had lived in a few different states there, including Mississippi, Tennessee, Massachusetts, California, New York, and then now Los Angeles. In 2012, Hermela acquired her American citizenship after settling for 18 years there. Little known about her family, it is recognized that Professor Haregewoin Assefa is her mother. Living with many people from different backgrounds has helped Hermela broaden her perspective on life.

Due to her deep affection and fondness for journalism, she put on her mom’s heels at a young age and played host and reporter. Interestingly, it doesn’t take her a while to start living her childhood dreams. Immediately after she had arrived in the U.S., she got hooked on popular talk shows and magazine shows like The Oprah Winfrey Show and 20/20 with Barbara Walters.

Hermela had earned her Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Broadcast Journalism from Emerson College in Boston. She was chosen to be a college reporter for the 2009 Academy Awards at this college. Hermela began her career by taking a role of an assistant to CBS CEO Leslie Moonves. She had also worked as a production assistant, and associate producer for CBS Daytime shows Judge Joe Brown and Judge Judy. Moreover, she served as a presenter and segment producer in Current TV and The Young Turks online. Throughout her stay in the younger Turks, she was part of the award-winning coverage of the 2012 Presidential Election. 

On her next career journey, Hermela joined Al Jazeera America, an American basic cable owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network. Before it got shut down in April 2016, Hermela worked there as a correspondent and digital producer. While she was on al-Jazeera, she focused on viral and trending topics like the pains of opioid addiction and recovery to the rise of islamophobia against Muslim-American families in the New York City area. Besides, she served as a correspondent for the network’s morning show and Your World This Morning. 

After working for three years in Al Jazeera America, Hermela joined KRON4 in the Bay Area. She worked there taking the role of News video journalist. While she was at KRON4, she covered major stories, including the devastating 2017 North Bay fires that killed dozens and scorched more than 200,000 acres. 

In November 2018, Hermela moved to Los Angeles and joined CBS2/KCAL station after reporting for more than two years in San Francisco Bay Area. Before deciding to be an independent reporter, she worked as a general assignment reporter for CBS2/KCAL-TV.

Hermela is currently working as an independent journalist targeting to change the wrong media narrative about the conflict happening in Ethiopia. She now runs her youtube channel, having several virtual interviews involving the Ethiopia-Tigray war.

    She is both good and bad. She is very involved but it seems for personal gain. She takes advantage of the uneducated and uses them for her benefit. Usually, she throws them away afterwards.
