Stories in the Book

This book consists of 12 short novels. Among them, these are the reviewers’ best ones.

Yemeswat Lijoch (የመስዋዕት ልጆች)

Yemeswat Lijoch (የመስዋዕት ልጆች) is an eight-page story that tells how a sex worker struggles to live in a community where prostitutes are hated and reviled. It demonstrates the level of condemnation a prostitute faces in society. In particular, the story illustrates the severity the community exercises toward a sex worker whose only means of income is prostitution. People in the neighborhood treated the prostitute harshly. Because of the discrimination, the woman was consequently compelled to become friends with a sheep. But sadly, the sheep itself is then subjected to the same cruelty as its owner. At the end of the story, it is shown that the community never stopped their severity against the woman, despite her attempts to break away from prostitution.

Shinkur (ሽንቁር)

The story shows the life of a man who, as a child, falls in love with a policewoman. It reveals the complete life of the man, from his childhood to his present situation as a young man. In the story, the man confesses his past and tells his story from when he was a young man. The story then demonstrates how engrossed the man is in his earlier memories of the woman and how these early memories have affected his present affairs with other women.

Chereren (ጨረሬን)

Chereren (ጨረሬን) is a story about a very old lady whose hope of life hangs on a single ray of light.

Tatochu (ጣቶቹ)

Tatochu (ጣቶቹ) states the importance of the five fingers to a young lady’s happiness.
