
Dr. Tewolde Gebremariam is the former Group Chief Executive Officer of Africa’s largest airline group, Ethiopian Airlines. He is a successful business leader whose name is well-known in Ethiopia and across Africa when it comes to the aviation industry. Dr. Tewolde is a canonical leader who turned Ethiopian Airlines into one of the best airlines in Africa. He is credited for the courageous, profoundly influential changes he made to Ethiopian Airlines, taking it from being perhaps a small, average airline to one that competes with the largest airlines in the world.
Career in The Ethiopian Airlines

Dr. Tewolde Gebremariam served as the group chief executive officer of the Ethiopian Airlines Group from 2011 to 2022. Dr. Tewolde oversaw the airline for more than ten years with remarkable success, which was evident in its exceptional performance in all parameters. Among his accomplishments were – the airline’s exponential growth from $1 billion to $4.5 billion in annual revenue, from 33 to 130 aircraft, and from 3 million to 12 million passengers (pre-COVID). Under his direction, the airline group has expanded by fourfold, investing more than USD 700 million in building key infrastructure, including Africa’s largest hotel, a cargo terminal, MRO hangars and shops, an aviation academy, and full flight simulators. Nevertheless, Dr. Tewolde resigned from his position as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines after 11 years over health issues.
Other Roles and Achievement

In addition to serving as Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Tewolde held positions on the boards of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the High-Level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport with the United Nations, and the Airlink Advisory Council. He also serves on the board of directors of the African Travel Association (ATA), the Ethiopian Tourism Organization, and the Executive Committee of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA).
